From 10 - 12 February 2009 at MD&M Plasmatreat presented its latest developments in the field of surface treatment of medical products. The annual exhibition which takes place in Anaheim, USA, with over 1,300 exhibitors and 15,000 visitors from all round the world counts as the most important resource for specialists in medical product development and design.

Wally Hansen, Plasmatreat Market Manager, California, and Zac MacKay, Plasmatreat North America, Inc., Toronto, demonstrated to the visitors the use of Openair® plasma technology on the basis of the RD1004 rotary jet in combination with the FG5001 generator presented for the first time in the west of the United States. Apart from its new design the generator is outstanding primarily for its ability to balance out differing and fluctuating mains voltages.

The public’s special interest was directed at the primer-free and low-cost pretreatment of plastics prior to adhesive bonding and printing processes as well as surface coating by the PlasmaPlus process. The "PlasmatreaterAS400" test installation for the latter process presented at the exhibition is used for computer-controlled process evaluation in the laboratory to determine the optimum treatment parameters for a subsequent series installation. The PlasmaPlus® process makes it possible to apply nanocoatings to materials at normal atmospheric pressure. What was hitherto only possible by a low-pressure process (vacuum) can now be carried out without a costly chamber system. This plasma coating allows, inter alia, selective corrosion protection on metals, reduces diffusion through plastics and produces functional, hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces.
