The revolution in PlasmaPlusTM inline coatings
PlasmaPlusTM is an exciting new technology for functionalizing surfaces with coatings that are nanometers thick. It is different from traditional coatings that are primarily needed for protection and aesthetics. Functional coatings can change the surface characteristics to increase strength, reduce friction, repel or attract liquids, provide a gas barrier and many other potential uses.


PlasmaPlusTM works by vaporizing a liquid precursor or by using a specialty gas that is then injected directly into the plasma stream creating smaller molecules that are deposited onto the substrate where they bond and re-polymerize. The thickness of the coating can be controlled by regulating the flow rate of the precursor, the residence time over the surface and the energy of the plasma. Films of between 10 nanometers and 700 nanometers can be applied in a single pass.

This technology is new; we announced it in 2006. We believe the potential for this new approach to surface functionalization will provide our customers with new opportunities and significant competitive advantages.

Diverse applications that increase material functionality
Already PlasmaPlusTM is achieving excellent results. The most important is to promote adhesion on glass and metals for bonding with thermoplastic elastomers (TPE), synthetic rubbers (EPDM) and polyurethanes (PU).

Another important application is for the application of low friction coatings for mechanical applications and medical devices.

Several other applications are being utilized and achieving results superior to what has been possible using more traditional technologies:

  • Achieving water, oxygen and CO2 barriers, for extended shelf life and taste retention,
    together with product durability.
  • Ultra-light scratch-resistant coatings for plastics like polycarbonate.
  • Coating HD DVDs to prevent moisture from distorting the lamination.
  • Easy-to-clean hydrophobic coatings that repel dirt.
