Nowadays, many plastic components are finished in order to optimize them for their subsequent use. However, the plastic surfaces are only suitable to a limited extent for the required downstream processes such as bonding, painting or printing. The reason for this is often that the surface energy of the polymers used is too low, as is the case with non-polar polyolefins such as polypropylene or polyethylene, or that the parts are contaminated.
Surface treatment with Openair-Plasma® has established as an effective process in many industries. Plasma treatment cleans surfaces of organic contaminants, eliminates electrical potentials, and chemically binds oxygen and nitrogen groups of the Plasma gas into the plastic surface. As a result, the surface energy increases, which leads, among other things, to better wetting with fluids such as water-based coatings or adhesives, which are also chemically bonded.
In this PlasmaTalk, Erhard Krampe, plastics engineer, and head of the Plasmatreat Academy, will present and explain the successful use of Openair-Plasma® on various plastics and in different processing steps like injection molding, extrusion and compounding. Based on current research projects, he will additionally give an overview of future possibilities in this sector.
