Chemical solvents and complex cleaning methods have been widely used for the surface modification of medical device materials. Plasma technology offers an alternative surface modification approach that is both sustainable and cost effective. This method can be customized for a variety of materials such as polymers, metals and ceramics through the application of vacuum-based or atmospheric-pressure plasmas.

In the PlasmaTalk by Dr. Daphne Pappas, we demonstrate how plasma can enhance the performance of materials used in biomedical applications. The presentation will provide an overview of the fundamentals of plasma-material interactions, followed by real world examples. Common biomedical applications like catheters, microfluidic devices, cell culture and implantable materials, syringes and IV sets will be discussed.
