Titania-coatings for medical technology

Titania is a biological harmless and chemical stable material. It is used in various fields, e.g. medical engineering and catalysis. The special property of titania, in addition to the excellent biocompatibility, is the photocatalytic effect (by stimulation of light a substance is decomposed).

Titania coatings are all-rounders. They can be used in medical engineering to coat hip implants, bone screws, dental implants etc. or for medical equipment like scalpels, tweezers, pliers and wound dressings. The reason therefore is a high biocompatibility and a good growth of tissue on the implants.

Furthermore they can be used as antibacterial coatings on surfaces in Life Science due to the photocatalytic effect. Based on years of overuse of antibiotics and the resulting immunization such surfaces play an important role in order to avoid infections. Examples are the coating of medical surfaces in hospitals or doctors' offices. Even in the private sector antibacterial coatings on door handles, light switches, kitchen surfaces or in the sanitary area play an important role.

Titania surfaces are also used for catalysis of water and can serve as self-cleaning surfaces due to their superhydrophilicity. The peculiarity of plasma-coated titania surfaces is that their effects are present in visible light. Conventional coating show their effects only under UV light or, by elaborate doping, under visible light.

Plasmatreat succeeded in applying titania coatings on surfaces by using Openair-Plasma® while contributing to the research & development of hygiene and medical technology.
