The 1st FPC Technology Conference on innovative Fine Powder Coating technology took place in Bielefeld in May. Under the guidance of Plasmatreat Market Manager Winfried Meyer, Plasmatreat, ecoCOAT and Fraunhofer IST welcomed representatives from industry and research to the two-day conference.
The innovative technology generated a great deal of interest. Around 40 attendees representing the automotive industry, adhesive and adhesive tape manufacturing, power electronics, the metalworking industry, plastic parts production, medical engineering and shipbuilding travelled to Bielefeld. The aim of the two-day conference was to show them the high level of effectiveness and economic efficiency of the plasma-metal-powder coating process and inspire them to discover an application for their own product from the virtually unlimited scope.
This pioneering technology can, for example, make plastics electrically conductive or metals wear-resistant. Featuring in-line capabilities, high process speeds and area-selective, high-precision layer deposition, it occupies a niche between conventional low-pressure plasma techniques and thermal spray processes. Unlike the latter, however, thermal loading during coating is extremely low due to the characteristics of Openair® plasma technology. The FPC process is reliable and environmentally friendly since it eliminates the need for wet chemicals or environmentally harmful binders and solvents during layer synthesis. It is equally suitable for small and large production runs.
Users benefit from the partners' combined expertise. Whilst plasma expert Plasmatreat has over 20 years' experience of developing plasma jet technology and constructing atmospheric plasma systems, ecoCOAT GmbH from Allershausen in Bavaria specializes in coating powders, powder delivery systems and systems engineering. The third partner in the team is the Application Center for Plasma and Photonics (Plasma Particle Technology APP working group) of the Fraunhofer Institute for Surface Engineering and Thin Films IST in Göttingen.
The conference concluded with a visit to the Plasmatreat Application Center at the company's new headquarters in Steinhagen, only a few kilometers from Bielefeld, which was very well received by all participants. Live demonstrations followed by discussions gave thrilling insights into the different technologies developed by Plasmatreat and how they are used in industry.
