Medical devices must meet demanding requirements for surface quality, cleanliness and functionality. Whether catheters, catheter tubing, implantable components, laboratory consumables or surgical instruments, surface properties can be critical to product performance, process reliability and downstream manufacturing. Reliable surface preparation is therefore essential for processes such as bonding, coating and functionalization.

At the same time, every medical application has its own requirements. Some components need improved wettability before bonding or coating, while others require effective cleaning or precisely tailored surface properties. Component geometry, treatment objective, production environment and downstream processes all influence the choice of surface treatment strategy.

In this PlasmaTalk, Erhard Krampe will explain how plasma technologies can meet these diverse requirements in medical applications. The webinar focuses on three key areas of medical surface modification: surface activation, cleaning and functionalization through tailored surface properties and coatings. Practical examples involving catheter systems, implant components and medical polymers demonstrate the potential of plasma surface treatment in medical device manufacturing.

The application determines the plasma technology

The appropriate plasma process depends on the application. Some medical components benefit from selective or local treatment, while others require full-surface treatment of complex three-dimensional geometries or hard-to-reach areas.

With Openair-Plasma® and AURORA-Plasma, Plasmatreat offers both atmospheric-pressure and low-pressure plasma technologies. Openair-Plasma® enables selective, local or larger-area treatment under atmospheric conditions and can be integrated into automated, continuous production processes. AURORA-Plasma operates under controlled low-pressure conditions and expands the range of treatment options to include full-surface treatment, complex three-dimensional geometries and hard-to-reach areas.

The plasma technology can therefore be selected to match the specific requirements of the component, surface and manufacturing process. Participants will learn how these requirements determine the appropriate treatment approach and where atmospheric-pressure or low-pressure plasma technology offers distinct advantages.

What you will learn

  • Surface activation: How plasma treatment prepares medical devices for subsequent bonding, coating and manufacturing processes.
  • Cleaning: How plasma processes can help meet demanding cleaning requirements in medical applications.
  • Surface functionalization: How tailored surface properties can meet specific requirements and support subsequent coating processes.
  • Medical application examples: Insights into plasma surface treatment for catheters, catheter tubing, implant components and medical polymers.
  • Technology selection: How the application, geometry, treatment objective and production environment influence the choice between Openair-Plasma® and AURORA-Plasma.
  • Medical surface modification: Current opportunities for atmospheric-pressure and low-pressure plasma technologies in medical device manufacturing.
