Achieving stable, high-strength, and durable adhesion is a major challenge in many applications, and surface treatment technology is one of the key solutions.

Atmospheric-pressure plasma treatment is a surface modification method that can improve adhesion reliability without the use of solvents. Plasmatreat’s atmospheric-pressure plasma technology, Openair-Plasma®, has undergone continuous technological advancement and has been widely adopted across many industries worldwide. In recent years, as demand has grown and technologies have advanced rapidly, especially in electronics and semiconductor manufacturing, this technology has increasingly been used for applications such as underfill pretreatment and resin encapsulation pretreatment for power modules to help prevent delamination.

Title: The Importance of Cohesive Failure in Achieving High-Reliability, High-Quality Adhesion

Presentation Overview:
No matter how excellent adhesion strength and durability may be, these alone do not guarantee high-reliability, high-quality adhesion. It is also necessary to achieve low variability in adhesion performance, low defect rates, and favorable productivity and cost performance.

To satisfy these requirements, the basic approach is to reduce interfacial failure and increase the rate of cohesive failure. Surface modification is an essential technology for improving the cohesive failure rate.

In this presentation, Dr. Haraga will explain why improving the cohesive failure rate is important and how it can be achieved, from the perspectives of variability in adhesion strength, the onset strength of internal failure, fatigue characteristics, and the initial strength margin required against forces applied to bonded parts.
