Collaborating for Greater Efficiency and Quality in Battery Production

How Plasmatreat and Strama-MPS combine their expertise to optimize e-mobility processes.

Efficiency, quality, and process reliability are crucial in producing battery systems for electric mobility. The collaboration between Plasmatreat, a global leader in atmospheric plasma technology, and Strama-MPS, an international specialist in assembly and testing systems, is setting new standards in this area. Together, the two companies implement customer-specific solutions combining precise surface pretreatment with state-of-the-art system technology, benefiting battery manufacturers worldwide.

Strama-MPS Maschinenbau GmbH & Co. KG, which is based in Straubing, Germany, develops modular and scalable manufacturing solutions for battery production. These production lines cover all relevant process steps and can be adapted to specific requirements, including the seamless integration of technologies such as plasma treatment. Plasmatreat GmbH, based in Steinhagen, Germany, is the market leader in this field. They offer Openair-Plasma systems and equipment for surface cleaning, activation, and functional coating under atmospheric pressure conditions.

The two companies have collaborated in electromobility for over eight years. They have developed and successfully implemented individual, integrated system solutions in more than 50 joint projects, including production lines for prismatic, cylindrical, and pouch cells. The focus is on fully automating the pretreatment of cell and module components, especially before coating, film wrapping, or bonding.

A significant achievement was integrating an Openair-Plasma system into the fully automated production line of a global automotive group. The goal was to use plasma to activate the surfaces of the battery cells to ensure optimal adhesion of the adhesives. The plasma system, consisting of a generator, a plasma control unit (PCU), and a nozzle, was jointly designed and integrated into the manufacturing process. Integrated quality assurance modules document the effect of the plasma treatment and make the process reproducible as well as traceable.

Strama-MPS and Plasmatreat's joint customers benefit from both companies' expertise in various ways: they receive comprehensive solutions from a single source, enjoy high part flexibility, and experience a compact design and ease of use. Additionally, combining Openair-Plasma and PlasmaPlus allows for the application of functional coatings, such as those that protect battery housings from crevice corrosion. This results in economical, environmentally friendly, robust processes that eliminate the need for wet chemistry.

The collaboration between Plasmatreat and Strama-MPS represents technological depth, international experience, and a high degree of customer focus, with the clear goal of making battery production more efficient, sustainable, and future-proof.
